Fernando de Noronha
Description :
The archipelago of Fernando de Noronha is the top of an extinct volcano whose steep sliding slopes reach the Atlantic Ocean floor some 4300 meters below sea level.
The small group of islands lies four hundred kilometers east of Natal, a few degrees south of the equator and amidst the turbulence zone of the southern Ross barrier reefs.
Being perfectly located where the cold waters of the south Atlantic join the warm currents of the equatorial belt, Fernando de Noronha forms a natural resting place for whales and dolphins alike on their yearly journey from north to south. It is home and birthplace for a great variety of maritime species such as giant turtles.
The very peculiar climate of Fernando de Noronha shapes its face on every meter. The northern, equatorial coast of the main island is rocky and wild. Huge waves crash against washed-out cliffs. Humid damp forests radiate almost fluorescent shades of green. In sharp contrast, the southern side features sandy beaches and bays, dry prairies with some succulent plants.
'Pico do Morro', Fernando de Noronha's highest elevation, stands up against the ocean like a giant observation tower of a fortress... Indeed, until recently, ' Pico do Morro' served as Brazil's out post in the Atlantic for military purposes and a prison. All too often, political adversaries of the portuguese crown found themselves confined to the cages of the 'Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios'.
Since a couple of years ago, Fernando de Noronha enlightens its visitors with its new pacifists purpose. The archipelago is one of Brasil's most important National Parks and has become an outstanding research site for maritime life in the southern Atlantic. Fishing and hunting are strictly prohibited, flora and fauna are largely protected. Two thirds of the territory may neither be used for construction nor cultivation.
Lost as these islands are, they are a perfect plataform for research and study of biogenetics. Scientists from all over the world are engaged in long term projects here.
In recent years, Fernando de Noronha has become a diving paradise thanks to the currents, coming from Africa, the waters at Fernando de Noronha are almost completely free of floating sediments making this area one of the world's best dive spots, with excellent visibility, even at 50 meters, and great year-round water temperatures.
