Description :
The 'Big Island' is not to be missed, comprising 193 square kilometers of mountainous jungle, historic ruins and over 100 beaches of transparent green water, linked by well kept trails. It is located in the Angra dos Reis Bay, in a region south of Rio covered with Atlantic Rain Forest known as the Costa Verde (Green Coast). The island is largely unspoiled and it owes its preservation to the relative isolation in which it remained until a few years ago, due to the fact that during most of the 20th century it hosted one of Brazil's largest high security prisons. Ilha Grande is now a state park where cars are not allowed, which makes the island a paradise for hiking. We offer a full-day and and a two-day tour. On the second day we either join a boat trip with snorkeling or hike to the island’s highest point, the Parrot Peak, depending on weather conditions and hiking experience.

Schedule :

Day 1
Pick-up at 6:00AM. 1h15min drive to Mangaratiba port
Ferry boat trip (1h45min) to the Village of Abrćao. Departure at 8 AM.
3 hours hike visiting 4 beaches: Palmas, Mangues, Pouso and Lopes Mendes.
Option of taking a boat and hiking only for 30min.
Swimming and lunch
45min boat trip back to Abrćao
Overnight in the village of Abraćo.

Day 3 - Hike 6 hours to Parrot Peak (roundtrip)
Rest at the summit (959 meters)
Overnight in the village of Abraćo.

Day 2- Half day boat trip along the island's coast.
Snorkeling at Lagoa Azul, the island's best spot.
Visit Freguesia de Santana's old church and Saco do Céu.
Lunch in a typical seafood restaurant on the beach.
Ferry back to Mangaratiba at 5:30 PM.
Return to Rio, arrival around 9:00 PM

Recommendation:
Bring light clothes, raincoat, sun hat, sunscreen, swimming suit, beach sandals, hiking shoes, R$80.00(US$30.00) for meals and drinks.
